As I take the helm as STAND’s next Principal Director, I am mindful of how far we have come, and how much further we need to go. My work with STAND and anti-genocide advocacy since 2007 has led me to meet many interesting people from across the country. Whether from the streets of Toronto or the rolling prairies of Alberta, we come together under the common cause of Never Again. Many STAND members I have met over the years are also leaders in their own right, whether it be in their communities or on their university campuses. I am excited to work with the talented people volunteering with the national organization and our campus chapters across the country. Despite the difficulties of coordinating across three different time zones, we always manage to pull through.
Over the coming months, I will not shy away from tough problems to position STAND for the future. Our directors team will work to increase the organization’s sustainability, advocacy and engagement with yourselves as members. We may be distant physically, but this should not keep us from working closely together virtually. As Principal Director, I wish to help every one of this organization’s members reaching their full potential.
In the history of causes, we may want to think of ourselves as trailblazers. When STAND was founded in reaction to the horrific atrocities in Darfur, Sudan, anti-genocide advocacy was virtually non-existent. The cause against genocide is still new. There may be ups and downs along the way, but the goal of making the prevention of genocide a cornerstone of Canadian foreign policy is still a worthy goal worth fighting for. As such, I look forward to working with everyone in STAND on writing this organization’s next chapter.
